A glorious, intelligent romp with under-appreciated, rebellious rap and punk
I’m really excited about this, guys! I am fairly sure that Engaged and Outraged is one of the best playlists I’ve ever put together. Kicking off with a track by Kendrick Lamar that I think is designed to offend some people and turn a few heads, and one by Run the Jewels that will send those heads rolling on the floor, this playlist is about controlled rage, open rebellion, and cathartic release. It’s about heavy feedback, pointed words, and challenging the oppressor with torches and pitchforks. It’s about big drums, sweaty mosh-pits, and a scorched-earth approach to life in society. Expect your blood to boil.
Mingled throughout these 18 tracks are more than a few moments of just sheer audio genius, and I don’t know how else to describe it. From my favorite underground rappers Atmosphere comes track 8, “Kanye West,” a fantastic and atmospheric (ha, do you get it?!) track that sticks out for me. Lots of old-school punk comes up, too, in the form of Rise Against, the Clash, and Bad Religion. And then there’s this song “No Wow”, by the Kills, which just makes me want to retire from the capiitalistic edifice with joy. And of course, since track number 13 is always the highlight of my lists (though it may appear to be track 12 because there’s a chance you won’t be able to stream the song “Geurilla Radio” by Rage Against the Machine, LOL), go ahead and prepare yourself for the glory of “Politik Kills” by Manu Chao. This tri-lingual badass former Mano Negra frontman puts on a hell of a show and the song is fierce and political as they come! Hope you like it, and of course, I hope it makes your day just that much brighter and more rebellious!
